Hey Jamie

Disagree with you here. The reasons you state are not really specific to Apple or indeed relative to the search engine business (in effect I agree with Steve W)

1. Revenue - yes having another revenue stream is good. But it's not clear why search is that new stream

2. Consumer Relationship Channels - no unique Apple hook here... The same argument would stand for Amazon, Sony, Netflix, Nokia etc

3. Traffic - your funnelling point (aggregate search across product portfolio) is interesting.. Again though nothing unique for Apple to take advantage of here as other sites have large site traffic... Sony = website, PS3, TV, Wifi CyberShots etc

4. Brand Loyalty - Well... Therefore Coke (cokezone) should launch a search engine?

5. Ad Serving - indeed apple now have the operations to do search ads... Point of iAd though is to differentiate the platform... Android etc will have lowest common denominator ad platform(s). iPhone OS will be unique = unique pricing. Not to be in the Ad business but to protect the unique experience of Apple.

You've got some good points about Apple in general but for me, these are not cause for the conclusion to launch a search engine.

If I don't think they should build a search engine then what do I think they should do?

Nothing that they aren't already... By every measure Apple are a happy, successful company...

Less is more; their market cap swamps Sony but their product portfolio is tiny in comparison.

PS

@iphonerulez - I think Apple are a solid company but I do think overvalued... Market Cap at 5x Cash Flow? With valuation though everyone has their own parameters for value...

Thanks Steve. If you click on 1 in 100 ads you are very active clicker! The average is 0.09% click rate so even with this small number a lot of businesses are making a great deal of income.

The dominance of Google is a huge challenge that will put off 99% of all businesses that try and set up in the search space but I was thinking Apple has enough going for it to really tip their balance towards being a contender. I don't think for a minute they could beat Google at the search game!

Thanks Steve, you raise a very fair point. I guess to me it looks like a logical tie up to generate additional revenue. Would it boost hardware sales? Probably not.

Apple won't create a search engine, because doing so won't help it's other businesses. You suggest reasons why Apple's strengths would enhance a search business, when you need to suggest reasons why a search business would enhance Apple's strengths.

A search engine would probably be a lost cause since there's already Google and Bing fighting over market share. Google's been indexing the internet for so many years that Apple would be really far behind. I'd have like to see Apple challenge Google and get retribution for Android stealing market share from the iPhone, but they'd probably just be throwing away money.

Apple is going to have get revenue from somewhere since the analysts say that Apple is way overvalued and can't possibly support its current share price. All that stuff that Apple is selling and could probably double iPhone sales and yet Apple is still be considered overvalued. WTF. That iAd better do something for Apple. I hear people saying that they hate ads of all types, so I don't know how Apple is going to get anyone to click on those ads. I don't even mind ads but I never click on ads. Well maybe one out of a hundred. I can't believe Apple doesn't even make any money from all those billions of apps that are being downloaded.
